Mass mortality associated with luminescence has been dbserved in sorne Thai and Ecuadorian penaeid shrimp hatcheries in recent years. Samples collected from hatcheries in these two different areas revealed luminescent sucrose-negative Vibrio strains in larVal rearing tanks where mortality occurred. Pathogenicity trials were carried out to identify the causative agents of mortality and to study the course of infection . . Results showed that strains isolated from Thai hatclleries were more virulent than Ecuadorian strains when tested on different larval stages of Penaeus monodon. The virulence of these strains was also estimated. Trials on other species ofpenaeid shrimp demonstrated the specifie action of Thai strains. Drug sensitivity patterns revealed a... |

The principal objective of the work carried out in the deep waters adjoining the island shelf around Martinique between July 1991 and april 1992 was to establish an initial inventory of potentially exploitable deep benthic resources. The cylindrical lobster pot used during fishing experiments allowed the catch of a varied carcinological marine organisms of which six species at least have economic interest : 5 species of shrimp all belonging to the sub-order of Caridea of the Pandalidae family : Plesionika edwardsi, P. (macropoda) polyacanthomerus, P.laevis, Heterocarpus ensifer and H.laevigatus, and one species of prawn of the Nephropidae family : Eunephrops cadenasi. The yields, compared to those of commercial fishermen, were medium or good for Plesionika... |

For several years the fishermen of the West Indies have directed their activities towards new fishing grounds, notably the bathyales zones adjacent to island plateaux up to approximately 1000 metres in depth. Explorations carried out since 1989 have shown that diverse crustacean populations could be exploited. However, populations and exploitable stocks are not well known. The use of crustaceans traps as a fishing technique permits the capture of shellfish, shrimps and prawns of which at least six species could have commercial interest. The main objective of this work is do draw up an inventory of the principal commercial species as well as the accompanying species belonging to the subordres Decapoda macrura, anomura, brachyura and to the orders Isopoda... |

BP-type viruses infect wild and farmed shrimp species in the Americas and can cause high mortality in larval stages. Histologically, BP disease is characterized by the presence of occlusion bodies (OBs) in the nucleus of hepatopancreatic epithelial cells. By in situ hybridization using different molecular probes, we tested shrimp infected with BP-type viruses collected from several geographical areas. In one shrimp, a case of double infection by 2 different BP-type viruses was noted. This has not been previously reported. The molecular probes recognized only the Pacific strain of BP. This specificity of the probe was confirmed by in situ hybridization tests with some infected shrimp collected from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The probes reacted only... |

A molecular typing study on Vibrio strains implicated in shrimp disease outbreaks in New Caledonia and Japan was conducted by using AP-PCR (arbitrarily primed PCR). It allowed rapid identification of isolates at the genospecies level and studies of infraspecific population structures of epidemiological interest. Clusters identified within the species Vibrio penaeicida were related to their area of origin, allowing discrimination between Japanese and New Caledonian isolates, as well as between those from two different bays in New Caledonia separated by only 50 km. Other subclusters of New Caledonian V. penaeicida isolates could be identified, but it was not possible to link those differences to accurate epidemiological features. This contribution of AP-PCR... |

Shrimp production in Thailand has historically been undertaken in the saline and brackish waters of coastal mangroves. In recent years rising demand and prices for shrimp and falling productivity of mangrove areas have motivated an expansion of shrimp production into the fresh-water margins of river estuaries that were previously used for rice cultivation. Generalised additive models, which offer a comprehensive approach to regression analysis, are mainly used for empirical analysis, and model development and specification for rice and shrimp production in this study. This paper presents a brief introduction to generalised additive models, discusses how they are applied to develop cost functions to satisfy the restriction of production theory, and... |

Algae are utilized diversely in aquaculture, but their main applications are related to nutrition. They are used in toto, as a sole component or as a food additive to supply basic nutrients, color the flesh of salmonids or for other biological activities. The need for nutritional sources safer than traditional animal products has renewed interest in plants in general and algae in particular. This report deals principally with the nutritional role of microalgae in aquaculture. The larvae of molluscs, echinoderms and crustaceans as well as the live prey of some fish larvae feed on microalgae. Though attempts have been made to substitute inert particles for these micro-organisms which are difficult to produce, concentrate and store, only shrimp and live prey... |

Fish culture (seabass, turbot...) on the French metropolitan coast, and shrimp culture in the overseas territories (essentially New Caledonia and Tahiti) are subject to a regular development through land based farms. Three thematic of research on aquaculture ponds are carried out in CREMA-L’Houmeau, in collaboration with producers. The aim of the first one is to determine the optimal rearing conditions (stocking density, water renewal rate, input of oxygen, rate of feeding...) which allow to minimise the quantity of wastes for a similar final biomass. The second part aims to reduce the nutrient loading in the effluent, through open-air treatments: sedimentation ponds, foam fractionation, mass production of phytoplankton, and rearing of molluscs on the... |

Vibriosis is a major disease problem in shrimp aquaculture. 'Syndrome 93' is a seasonal juvenile vibriosis caused by Vibrio penaeicida which affects Litopenaeus stylirostris in grow-out ponds in New Caledonia. This study assessed the toxic activities of extracellular products (ECPs) from V: penaeicida, V. alginolyticus and V, nigripulchritudo using in vivo injections in healthy juvenile L. stylirostris (= Penaeus stylirostris) and in vitro assays on shrimp primary cell cultures and the fish cell line epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC). Toxic effects of ECPs were demonstrated for all pathogenic Vibrio strains tested both in vivo and in vitro, but for shrimp only; no effect was observed on the fish cell line. ECP toxicity for New Caledonian V. penaeicida... |

In New Caledonia, the "syndrome 93," which results in mass mortalities of farmed shrimp Penaeus stylirostris, occurs during the transitional and the cold seasons. The transitional season is characterized by an important fall in the average water temperature from 28 to 19 degreesC in 2 weeks. Besides this marked temperature fall, there are also nyctemeral temperature changes of up to 7 degreesC in 12 h. The cold season is characterized by an average water temperature of 19 degreesC with extreme lows of 14 degreesC. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of temperature and its variations on the osmoregulatory capacity of juvenile (7-10 g average weight) and subadult (25 g average weight) shrimps subjected to conditions of different salinity.... |

A study was conducted to evaluate variations of digestive enzyme activities in Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone) reared in commercial ponds under semi-intensive conditions. Shrimp were collected at each body weight increase of 2 g. As the shrimp grew (2-12 g), significant increases in the activities of lipase and chymotrypsin were observed. The total protease activity decreased from 6 g onwards. Trypsin activity showed a peak at 6 g and amylase activity increased two-fold after 2 g. Additionally, the stomach contents were analysed microscopically for shrimp between 2 and 10 g. Plant matter contributed above 30% of the total stomach content in 6-, 8- and 10-g shrimp. Detritus represented 58% and 62% of the total stomach content in 2- and 4-g shrimp,... |

The Latin American shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris was introduced in three different Pacific islands (Tahiti, New Caledonia via Tahiti, and Hawaii) and hatchery-propagated for 7-25 generations to develop shrimp farming based on these domesticated stocks. Three microsatellite markers have been used in an attempt to assess the genetic bases of the populations available to start a selective breeding program. The comparison of eight hatchery stocks (five New Caledonian, two Hawaiian and one Tahitian stocks) and one wild Ecuadorian population showed a much lower variability in the domesticated stocks than in the wild population, especially in New Caledonia and Tahiti (2-3.7 vs. 14-27 alleles per locus; 20-60% vs. 90% expected heterozygosity). The Tahitian and... |

Aquaculture of penaeid shrimps holds a major place in productions of animals. New Caledonia takes part to these productions by developing the breeding of Pacific blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Nowadays, penaeid larviculture can’t be undertaken unless antibiotics are used. Experiments in the Caledonian Aquacultural Laboratory (LAC IFREMER Saint-Vincent) put across to the development of two antibiotic prophylaxis plans for substitution of erythromycine, one plan with oxytetracycline (hydrochloride), the other plan with trimethoprime-sulfadiazine association. After an antimicrobial agent susceptibility testing of bacteria and an acute toxicity study, efficacity assays are the biological validation of these projects of protocols |

The pathogenicity of two V. penaeicida strains, AM101 and KH-1, with different geographic origin, and V. nigripulchritudo strain AM102, were investigated in juvenile blue shrimp species Litopenaeus stylirostris. Alive bacteria and protein fractions (PFs) obtained from cell-free supernatants (CFS) were used in experimental challenges. Strains AM102, AM101, and KH-1 produced respectively 60, 54 and 12% mortality at 96h after infection using 104 cfu mL-1 of bacterial suspension. Exocellular toxin-like factors were evidenced in CFS from the New Caledonian strains (AM102 and AM101) but not the Japanese strain (KH-1). At 48h post injection of each CFS, mortality rates were respectively 96,98 and 5% when these strains were cultivated at 20°C, whereas only O,16... |

The phylogenetic diversity of the gut microbial population of the hydrothermal shrimp Rimicaris exoculata was determined. The presence of micro-organisms in the hindgut of the shrimp was determined, and their morphology illustrated for the first time by transmission electron microscopy. DNA was extracted from the fore-, mid- and hindgut of shrimps collected at the Rainbow site, at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and the sequences of the small-subunit rRNA (16S rDNA) were analyzed. Seven different bacterial phylotypes were identified from the 90 clones screened. The sequences were affiliated to three major groups: epsilon-Proteobacteria (48,8%), Entomoplasmatales (23.3%) and representatives of the new phylum Deferribacteres (26.6%). These results show that the... |
